The Future of Video

Wondering about the future of video?  Advancements in video software and cloud-based learning platforms have led to some pretty neat opportunities for learning.  We describe a few below:

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality is an immersive, computer-generated video experience wherein the user is transported to an entirely "new" (simulated) environment.  Current technology most commonly incorporates virtual reality headsets or projected environments to create realistic images that simulate a person's physical presence (situated) in a virtual or imaginary environment.

360° Video

360 degree video had historically been an expensive tool to implement for educators, requiring advanced software programs and costly professional cameras.  However, this is changing with the recent emergence of consumer and "prosumer" 360 degree cameras.  These new, less expensive cameras are portable and automatically connect ("stitch" together) full 360 degree scenes using lightweight and consumer-friendly software.  Check out this link to learn more about immersive learning.and storytelling experiences.

Adaptive eLearning Experiences

The easiest way to think about adaptive learning is relating it to the concept of "differentiated learning."  Adaptive learning, much like differentiated learning, is a methodology that is used to implement learning that suits the needs of a learner, but unlike differentiated learning where the instructor creates differentiated learning experiences, adaptive learning uses artificial intelligence like machine learning and student rules-based pathways to adapt to the learner.  Video will be an important step in supporting student learning across adaptive learning experiences and courses, as instructors will be forced to provide significant, differentiated content for students across different adaptive experiences.
